A Life of Grit and Achievement

Emeritus Professor Mark Okeke Chibuko Anikpo’s life is a profound testament to the power of resilience. As his autobiography title so aptly declares, he is a serial survivor—a man who, with “Spartan fortitude” has triumphed over extraordinary adversity to build a blazing career and an adorable family.

The Formative Years

Born on May 29, 1945, in Enugu, his early life was shaped by a disciplined, faith-filled upbringing and the tough environment of the Warders Barracks. This harsh start, which included trekking 30km daily to school, forged the unyielding spirit that would define his future. He excelled academically, graduating with a Grade One pass from the prestigious College of Immaculate Conception (C.I.C.), Enugu, in 1964.

Trial by Fire: The Biafra-Nigeria War

The Biafra-Nigeria war was a crucible that tested his will to live. Serving as an Infantry Officer, he faced his closest brush with death when a bullet, fired at close range, pierced his chest.

He was abandoned and left for dead, but in what he describes as “nothing short of God’s direct intervention”, he miraculously survived after four months in the hospital. This experience became a defining moment, cementing his destiny as one who would always endure.

The Pinnacle of Academia

After the war, his academic journey resumed with vigor. He graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) with a First-Class Honours degree in Sociology & Anthropology in 1974, earning the prestigious National Scholar Award. This achievement earned him a direct admission for a PhD at the University of Cambridge, England, which he completed in 1979.

He joined the University of Port Harcourt, where his intellectual prowess and prolific publications led to a rapid rise through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as a full Professor of Sociology in 1989.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

Professor Anikpo’s career was marked by distinguished leadership. He served as Head of Department, Dean of Social Sciences, Chairman of ASUU, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Port Harcourt. He also served as Acting Vice-Chancellor at both ESUT and Uniport. His contributions to academia and community were recognized with the chieftaincy title ‘Ugwumba 1 of Mmaku‘ (Pride of the People) and the esteemed Fellowship of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria (FSSAN).

After retiring in 2015, he was honored as Emeritus Professor. He once again demonstrated his incredible resilience by overcoming a debilitating lumbrosis that had confined him to a wheelchair. This period of reflection led to the writing of his autobiography, a powerful chronicle of a life truly destined to survive.
